The Saturnales

The Saturnales were an ancient Roman festival celebrated in honour of the god Saturn and took place at the end of December, marking the winter solstice and the end of agricultural work. During this festival, a series of traditions and rituals took place, including feasting, games, gifts, and a temporary reversal of roles, where slaves were freed and could enjoy certain freedoms. This holiday was marked by a period of liberation and excess, allowing people to temporarily escape from social restrictions.
THE ROMAN VILLA OF NOHEDA
The villa Romana de Noheda, located just 18 km from Cuenca, is an archaeological treasure that invites you to travel back in time. This site, occupied between the 1st century BC and the 6th century AD, is located in a privileged setting, close to other historical sites such as Segóbriga, Ercávica and Valeria.

International Archaeology Day
The International Archaeology Day is celebrated on 18 August, a day dedicated to recognising the work of those who research, protect and promote our historical heritage. This date also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and making it accessible to the whole of society, particularly the younger generations. To mark the occasion, the Roman Villa of Noheda is organising a family educational workshop where young and old alike can discover the work of Roman potters and create their own theatre masks.
NEW VIEWING AREA
Opened on Balneum of the Roman Villa at Noheda
The Roman Villa of Noheda has incorporated the Balneum into its tour following a major restoration project aimed at preserving its remains and helping visitors to understand this monumental Roman thermal complex. The project includes raised walkways, a partial volumetric reconstruction and a new lighting system.
The new tour allows visitors to view the building from a 360-degree perspective, appreciate its original dimensions and discover how private thermal baths functioned over 1,600 years ago, without disturbing the preserved archaeological remains.

INTERPRETATION CENTRE
The Interpretation Centre, located in the municipality of Villar de Domingo García, is an obligatory complement to complete the visit to the villa Roman. Here you will be able to:
- Discover what Roman villas were like through information panels, audiovisuals and replicas of everyday objects.
- Enjoy reproductions of the scenes from the impressive mosaic of the «triclinium»by Noheda. These are presented in backlit vinyls, showcases and photographs of the archaeological campaigns.
- Admire a collection of mosaics made with different modern techniques.
In addition, the centre is fully accessible, has adapted toilets and a large esplanade for parking cars and buses.

THE SITE
PARS URBANA AND THE SALA TRICORA
In the residential area (pars urban) highlights the Tri-absorbed Room, This is a space of almost 300 m², which preserves an impressive figurative mosaic. This mosaic is made up of six scenes depicting classical myths, theatrical companies and marine scenes, surrounded by geometric and plant designs.
Large Balneum or Thermal Complex
The thermal area of the villa, The 900 m² site includes different rooms: entrance hall and changing room (apodyterium), cold water room (frigidarium), warm water stay (tepidarium) and hot water room (caldarium), it also has several bathtubs (alvei). During the tour of the thermal complex, visitors can enjoy a musealisation of the space which, by means of a reversible system, recreates the original volume of the building. This architectural representation, and the building that protects it, not only facilitates the understanding of its design, but also guarantees the protection of the archaeological remains, while at the same time it is very stimulating, as the visitor feels as if he or she were inside the thermal space.
The pars rustica and pars fructuaria
To the north of the residential area is the pars rustica, which were those structures where the workers of the rural complex lived. These buildings were not as voluminous and well-built as the house of the dominus, They have therefore come down to us in a precarious state of preservation. However, the presence of this type of construction, together with the pars fructuaria (farms dedicated to the storage and processing of agricultural products), confirm the importance of agricultural production in the economy of the region. villa.
Cruciform building
Archaeological excavations are currently being carried out in a large area of almost 900 m in size.2, located immediately east of the triclinium, The walls are 1.20 m wide and at least 2.05 m high. For the moment, the function of this large space is unknown, but the imposing dimensions and the great strength of its walls point to a building of great importance. Furthermore, in this large room, once its original function was lost, a late necropolis was improvised.
